In de eerste twee jaren van de oorlog werkte hij voor een Propagandakompagnie van de Luftwaffe. Van 1942 tot 1945 werkte hij voor het bekende tijdschrift Signal. Na de oorlog kon hij zijn perscarrière vrij ongemoeid verderzetten. Dit boek is het relaas van zijn tijd bij een Geschwader in Frankrijk.
