Apparsa nel 1922, La terra desolata è la pietra di paragone della poesia moderna. Smembrati e sottratti alla storia culturale, eroi e luoghi del passato letterario si ricompongono in un montaggio poetico di immagini, incroci intertestuali, registri dissonanti; ormai simboli di un presente desolato, allegorie di una terra “guasta”, protagonisti del tempo drammatico della morte degli dèi. E partecipi della vocazione del mondo contemporaneo a tradurre il tragico in farsa: l’inferno dantesco riemerge nell’irrealtà della città contemporanea; il grido garrulo di Filomela si dissolve nel chiacchiericcio di un pub; sulle sponde del Tamigi gli slanci dell’eros si riducono a una pantomima da dopo pranzo. Il poemetto è l’esito di una lunga gestazione, costellata di ripensamenti.
