Teniendo en cuenta que estos analisis abarcan desde 1897 a 1901 entonces se comprendera el valor sin igual que posee dicha publicacion.

Madrid Filatélico apareció el 1 de enero de 1897. Se trata por consiguiente de la más antigua de España aqui a la venta los numeros correspondientes desde 1897 a 1901.

En aquel primer ejemplar, tras un encendido elogio a la prensa, el editorial afirmaba: «La Filatelia no es, como algunos creen, una mera afición, una manía coleccionista. Es algo más, es mucho más. Es hoy, y ha de serlo en el porvenir, un elemento principalísimo para reconstituir la historia de nuestros tiempos, no de otro modo que la Numismática o la Paleografía nos ayudan al estudio de los siglos que fueron.

En tal concepto, y como nueva rama de la ciencia histórica, la filatelia se ha abierto camino en el noble estudio de la prensa buscando en él sus medios de propaganda y, tanto en España como en el extranjero tiene ya valiosas publicaciones. Madrid Filatélico viene a pedir plaza en este concurso de la inteligencia…»

Más adelante, bajo el título «NUESTRO PROGRAMA» escribe: «Al imponernos la tarea de la publicación de esta revista no nos ha guiado idea alguna de lucro, pues sabido es cuan difícil es hoy buscar negocio por medio de la prensa, dada la situación económica por la que atraviesa nuestra querida Patria: únicamente nos ha hecho dar a la luz pública esta nueva revista el deseo de fomentar la afición filatélica, por la cual sentimos verdadero entusiasmo, y que, dormida por algún tiempo en España, despierta hoy de ese sueño letárgico con más ardor que nunca.»

Lo cierto es que esta revista a lo largo de los años ha cumplido con ese propósito, en ciertas épocas mejor que en otras, según la personalidad de su correspondiente director y las aportaciones de sus colaboradores, pero siempre desde la perspectiva, como por otra parte es lógico, de los intereses comerciales de la Casa Gálvez y más concretamente de Miguel Gálvez en sus inicios y de Manuel Gálvez más tarde. Con la frase «no nos ha guiado idea alguna de lucro» el editorialista está dando muestra de ese sentido de pudor o vergüenza al que me refería al principio de este artículo, como si hubiera de tratarse de algo condenable ganarse la vida a través del ejercicio del comercio de filatelia.
