Greece – the Cradle of Olympic Games

In 2004, the Olympic Games returned to their origins when Athens hosts the Games of the XXVIII Olympiad from 13 to 29 August. The first Olympic Games can be traced back to 776 BC in Olympia (hence the name Olympic) and their origin is traditionally attributed to many different Greek myths. Thanks to the great efforts of Frenchman Pierre de Coubertin, the Olympic Games were revived in the 19th century and the first modern Olympic Games were held in Athens in 1896. Unlike the ancient Olympic Games – where winning was of paramount importance and defeat would bring disgrace to whole polis (or city-state) – the Olympic philosophy of Baron Pierre de Coubertin opposed the emphasis put on victory. According to the Olympic Creed, the most important thing in the Olympic Games is not to win, but to take part. The ancient Olympic Games were mainly confined to running, , wrestling, pankration, javelin hurling, discus throwing and long jumping. The last two disciplines are also depicted on this year's Olympic stamps. Following on from the traditions of Ancient Greece, the Olympic Games in Athens in 1896 were an exclusively male preserve. The program for the 1896 Games included about 300 athletes from 13 countries competing in nine different sports: athletics, weightlifting, cycling, aquatics, wrestling, fencing, shooting, gymnastics and tennis. In contrast, the program for the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece, will include competitions in 30 different sports. The 2004 Slovenia's Olympic team will be composed of Slovenia's top athletes. In the past, Slovenian sportsmen and women have performed well at the Olympics: at the Summer Olympic Games, they won two bronze medals (Barcelona 1992), two silver medals (Atlanta 1996) and two gold medals (Sydney 2000).
