United States, Scott #965 used(o), 1948, Continuation of the Famous Americans Series, American Justices, honoring Harlan F. Stone (1872-1946), an American attorney and jurist who served as an Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court from 1925 to 1941, then as Chief Justice from 1941 until his death in 1946; as an associate justice, under then Chief Justice Hughes, he joined with Justices Brandeis and Cardozo to form a liberal block called the 'Three Musketeers' that generally voted to uphold the constitutionality of the controversial New Deal legislation; a major case while he was Chief Justice was the decision in Korematsu v. United States in 1944, ruling that the exclusion of Japanese Americans into interment camps was constitutional; 3 cents, bright red violet, engraved, perforated: 10½x11, Scott 2019 Catalog Value: 25¢, nicely centered, quarter circular, black-inked, single-rimmed, socked-on-the-nose corner cancellation with some mailing details on the lower left corner and just clear of the main image with a trailing touch of a horizontal line cancel at the lower right corner also well clear of the main image, sound back, hinge remnant, good perforations; centering, and image clear cancel warrants a selling price premium.
