1903 (25 Aug) British 1d postal stationery postcard sent from London to Germany with printed message on reverse headed "LONDON OFFICE OF THE INSPECTORATE GENERAL OF CHINESE IMPERIAL MARITIME CUSTOMS" with the compliments of "Sir Robert Hart, Bart, GCMG Inspector General of the Chinese Customs, Peking" from "J. D. Campbell, Secretary". Robert Hart as Inspector General of Customs was the ultimate head of the postal service in China but it is unusual to find any postally- related item bearing his name. A delightful item which would nicely supplement any exhibit or collection referring to fascinating mans major influence on Chinese / European relations and the formation of a modernized postal service.
